Diabetes Prevention

The old adage 'Prevention is better than cure' is especially true for diabetes.
  1. It is desirable that a man with diabetes (or with a possibility of developing diabetes) does not marry a woman with diabetes (or with a possibility of developing diabetes). If both the parents are diabetics, their children almost certainly inherit the disease.
Before giving consent for the marriage, it is becoming customary these days to match the horoscopes of the prospective bride and the groom, to ascertain that their stars are favorable to each other. In fact, it is more essential to know whether either of them has a family history of diabetes (or other inheritable diseases). It is also desirable to know the blood-group of the other person.
  2. Incorrect dietary habits playa major role in the development of diabetes. Parents should take great care to form correct dietary habits in their children. Children should prevented from becoming addicts of ice cream, cakes, jam, jelly, peppermint, chocolates and other sweets. The amount "food given to children should be such as would allow growth but not obesity. Ideal (or less than ideal) weight and a proportionate (or slim) body is an almost certain guarantee against diabetes.
Person with a family history of diabetes should accept voluntary diet-control after the age of 30 years, since physical development has been completed. This is inevitable for sedentary and obese persons.
  3. Every person should include in his or her daily, schedule, regular physical exercise and yoga. Parents should convince their children about the paramount importance of exercise and should encourage them for outdoor sports.
  4. Mothers who give birth to very large and heavy babies may be in a pre-diabetic stage. They should be all the more conscious about their diet, lest dormant diabetes should get converted into established diabetes. It is also desirable that such mothers do not give birth to more than two (preferably one) babies, because every delivery enhances the chances of developing frank diabetes.
  5. All those persons, in whom a prediabetic state has been detected through 'stress glucose tolerance test', should take all necessary precautions to prevent actual disease.
  6. The incidence of diabetes is much higher in obese persons as compared to others. Therefore, every fat person should immediately take steps to lose weight and achieve ideal weight.
  7. Some people need medication to help control their blood pressure or cholesterol levels. If you do, take your medicines as directed. Ask your doctor whether there are any medicines you can take to prevent type 2 diabetes
